In the Fall of 2022, I set my eyes on the Capitol to create space for youth-led legislative solutions during the 2022-2023 Texas Legislative Session. As I delved into researching the intersections of domestic violence and gun violence, I discovered a concerning loophole in the state’s domestic violence firearm prohibition law. Determined to close this gap, I authored an amendment to Chapter 46 of the Texas Penal Code and collaborated closely with the Legislative Office of Representative Goodwin to have HB 2076 filed.
After a rigorous review process, HB 2076 was ultimately chosen for a hearing at the Texas Capitol Building. On March 21st, 2023, I brought together the voices of activists, domestic violence shelters, and fellow students, and submitted compelling testimonies in support of HB 2076 to the Community Safety Select Committee. During my time at the Capitol, I had the privilege of meeting with Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick. Currently, I am diligently working on producing a policy brief that highlights patterns in firearm bill language for Representative Goodwin’s legislative office.
